New plastic gun panic.

The press is sucking around to generate a new panic about firearms. CNET has a piece in which they fantasize about firearms being printed by 3D printers. The plastic gun scare is resurrected -- firearms no one can detect and so on.

The Democrats tried this before.

Back in the 1980s, the late Senator Howard Metzenbaum, (D-NY), started a furor about "plastic guns." Metzenbaum's guns could not be detected by airport security metal detectors. He claimed the "all plastic firearm" Glock 17 could slip through the scanners "then who knows what sort of havoc would ensue" The only responsible action was to ban all firearms (and hunting ammunition).

The Glock is a plastic firearm by legal definition.  As the article mentions without understanding, the legal firearm, the 'receiver', is essential to the rest of the gun, but in itself is not capable of shooting anything. The Glock's receiver is all plastic, but it would only serve as a paperweight in a combat situation. An engineer would point out much of the firearm is still metal, easily detectible by even primitive security mechanisms.

The gun-crazed, liberal press is at it again. The plastic gun is just as real as ever!  Its time to panic!  Or take a nap.

~~~~~~~~
To be technical, the Glock receiver has two steel pieces to serve as rails integrated into the frame. Without these pieces, the firearms does not function, but it still meets the legal definition of firearm.
~~~~~~~~

Gun haters have always tried to use ignorance and fear to push their gun hatred into law.  The 2012 Democratic Party Platform states a preference for gun control and proposes to ban "assault weapons"  (whatever that means). Regulating self-defense has been a tough sell to the American public, but the Democrats are going to try again.

They may not need to use the elective process. Justices Elena Kagen and Sonia Sotomayor, Mr Obama's picks for the Supreme Court, have been secretive about their gun loathing and anti-self-defense feeling.

Both Kagen and Sotomayor have deeply seated spite for firearms owners.  Sotomayor is even more clear in her belief that citizens do not have a right to be armed.  Sotmayor was on the US Second Circuit Court when she held that the Second Amendment did not apply to state laws like New York State's law prohibiting possession of most weapons.

If Mr Obama is consistent, and if he is re-elected, he will make as many as 3 more Supreme Court appointments.  Taking Kagen and Sotomayor as a guide, it is reasonable to assume the Supreme Court will overrule our right to defend ourselves with firearms in the next 4 years.
