What if making the rich pay actually slows the economy as a whole? Then doesn't everybody pay? The rich are the ones who work the levers which make a living for the rest of us.
At least the rich have the qualification of using their own wealth, so they are not likely to squander it. The qualification of a temporary government hireling (like most politicians), is they were elected. That explains why government so readily squanders our wealth and natural resources. They have the power of ownership, but that's all.
