What if the U.S. Launches Trade War With China

While the entire world is focused on the debt crisis in Europe, there’s another crisis quietly erupting here in the U.S. that could be just as dangerous. It has the potential to tip the whole global economy back into recession. We’ve seen it happen before, about 80 years ago.

After unemployment soared to 9% back in 1930, politicians were under a lot of pressure to create jobs. So the U.S. government implemented the Tariff act of 1930. This new act raised tariffs on imported goods to protect Americans’ jobs from foreign competitors.

The result? Seventeen countries responded with their own tariff plans. Suddenly, we had a trade war on our hands. That trade war caused a collapse in global trade, and ended up deepening the global depression and increasing unemployment.

Now the U.S. Senate could make the same mistake their predecessors made during the Great Depression. While this would be disastrous to the global economy, it all depends on what Congress does next.

The Bill that Would Guarantee a Global Recession
This past Monday, the U.S. Senate voted to open debate on a bill that would impose tariffs on imports from countries with undervalued currencies, such as China. In response, the Chinese government quickly warned this would lead to a trading war. As the Chinese Foreign Ministry said, this bill “will severely upset China-U.S. economic and trade relations.”

In other words, China is telling us that if we approve the bill, it will retaliate with protectionist measures. This is a fight where everyone loses.

The European debt crisis is getting out of control, and the U.S. is heading into another recession. A trading war between the world’s two largest economies is the last thing the global economy needs right now. But I wouldn’t be surprised if politicians approve the bill. After all, you can always count on them to do the wrong thing.

It’s all China’s Fault

The tensions between China and the U.S. can easily escalate in the months ahead, especially if the global economy continues to slow down. With the U.S. struggling to grow, there’s increasing pressure for politicians here to “do something.”

Instead of implementing the right policies here at home to promote job creation (reducing taxes and regulations), Washington prefers to blame China for our problems. It’s easier to say China is stealing “American jobs” by keeping its exports cheap.

Even Bernanke is now attacking China. This week, our Fed chief told Congress: “The Chinese currency policy is blocking what might be a more normal recovery process in the global economy. It is to some extent hurting the recovery.” After failing to help the U.S. economy with its monetary policies, the Fed is now also blaming China for our problems. Typical.

When The Shallow "Think"

The sudden interest in assigning blame for this government's failed policies to China is typical of this administration. The Obama Administration and the Democrats in the Senate seem incapable of thinking a problem through, so they blame. We know anything they do will have consequences; blithely ignoring personal responsibility does not reduce the burden the country will bear.

The Wall Street protesters are of the same mind set. A complete and thorough understanding of the situation would help them formulate useful policy, which would probably be to go home. Things are the way they are for a reason. Until you develop a sound understanding, anything you do will make the situation worse. But they appear to believe they can overcome problems by wishful thinking and ignoring them. Choruses for revenge for imagined wrongs is not helpful. The marchers mean nobody any good.

They are perfect suckers.

Leftist Imperialism

The Left makes moral equivalence between our nation fighting for its survival, and their attempts at its destruction. We must resist, and our resistance must grow teeth. If we continue to resist in reticence, we only make the struggle longer. And delay is all the Left needs to succeed.

Leftists and the so-called "progressives" have an intellectual model of society focused on structure. The structure concept suggests theirs is a rigid, unchanging worldview... a perfect model of a dead society. Plus Leftists think that political power is a mandate to impose their views on everyone who does not share those views. Its no wonder when the Left gets power society begins to die.

Economics, as a dynamic science, is beyond the Left. Most Leftist economists you meet are superb at econometrics, making the measurements, but they have no clear idea of what impels a market to function, and why it can change so quickly.

One change is complete collapse. The Left once again misunderstands that a massive government debt can collapse an economy. People will survive, but nothing will be the same.

Business is what people do when they want to make a living. If massive debt weren't enough, the Obama administration is laying so many burdens on small business that many owners will bag it. The Left will be mystified by how merely doubling the time required to do accounting for the IRS can result in a dramatic increase in business failures (under threat of audit).

You see, the Left has cheerfully added on a massive increase in required 1099 filings. The uptick in small business failures will be very soon. Their punitive attitude is already destroying capital formation. An easy-to-see thermometer of this is the Dow index. Its falling. We're in for a long cold winter.

Group decisions of personal matters are another way the Left intrudes its long nose into people's lives. A motto of the Soviet regime shortly after the October Revolution was, "The personal life in dead in Russia." They weren't kidding. Centralized control of health care access is a perfect example of the Left intruding into the personal life.

No matter that high officials also expect and get away with all kinds of misbehavior. Witness the Sestak bribery case. The Left is so fond of its authoritarian regime they seek to bury this story instead of investigating it. If there is substance to the story, and it leads all the way to Mr Obama, he has committed a felonious crime worthy of removal.

Why would anyone willingly choose to support an authoritarian regime like this one? These Leftists must have completely lost any sense of self-worth to long for a despot to rule over them.

Egg Roll Obamunism

The massive government Left seeks to destroy the individual, replacing us humans with statistics. They remind me of J B Priestly's remark about the soclialist state's logical conclusion.

"Between midnight and dawn, when sleep will not come and all the old wounds begin to ache, I often have this nightmare vision of a future world in which there are billions of people, all numbered and registered, with not a gleam of genius anywhere, not an original mind, a rich personality, on the whole packed globe."

What occupied Priestly was he was also socialist. Priestley had a healthy distrust of the massive state, social intrusiveness and political dogmatism. Its alarming that Leftist politicians are so contemptuous and resentful toward their constituents.

In other words, We're doomed.

So its high time to have a little laugh at these Big Government Leftists. I know that is like telling the robbery victim to have a little fun with the armed thug. It gets dangerous when the thug takes offense. But our option is to lie back and not make a sound.

The 'Chia Obama' bobble head can be had for $20. Leftists hate it (but the White House is reputed to have one). Be sure to get one, since they feature a "Convenient Drip Tray" (how nice!). It will give you a chance to give Effigy Obama a taste of the same fertilizer he is giving us.

Better Organized

Left wing groups are better organized than conservatives.

No surprise there, since conservatives prefer individual values. Values like individual responsibility, individual industry, individual freedom... . Conservative values are humanitarian values; the human being comes first.

All the left can offer is conformity, forced labor, and enslavement for all (except the elites). Leftist values are humanist values; no variations in results are allowed. The individual is smothered. Conformity is all that matters.

Humanity Lesson

Politicians don't understand humanity. Leftist politicians are especially bad. There are three things critical to a living human society. First, you need a place to live, next you want to be able to buy things, and last, someone has to make the things you buy.

In free society, people work together and do all three things without being told. They build houses, they sell things and they get jobs to make things. Sometimes they get jobs to organize one of these areas.

Politicians short circuit this operation. Politicians get elected and proclaim they can allocate resources better than free people can. Never mind the people do a good job of this on their own. A politician wants to tell us what to do.

We get to the current nightmare.... People voted a bunch of leftists into control of Congress (where the law is made) in 2006. By 2007, the economy was groaning. On through 2008 things get worse. Now we are in the unhappy present. And we are even further left than ever.

It looks very bad. The Leftists are much better organized than ever before.

Remember nothing is free. If you want a politician to give you something, you have to give him something. You give up your self-respect and freedom, even your existence.

Greedy Leftists

Politicians are the greediest, most clueless people in the world. At this time of economic problem, they feel a little pinch in their ambitions. Everybody else is hurting and the politicians raise tax rates! Up yours, people!

Unbelievably gross and stupid, the politicians insist the tax is only on the "rich." Can they really believe slamming people with a sales tax hike is good policy? Or can politicians believe dissolving family farms with inheritance taxes is a wonderful thing? How stupid are we supposed to be?

It depends. The press corps cheers any tax increase used to grow government bigger, more intrusive, less caring, and more hostile. Do you think the world's largest corporation (Yes, Virginia, the U.S. Government is a giant corporation.) gives a thought about you?

Don't start mouthing, "Bush did it." Did you notice Barrack Obama is president? Did you notice the Democreeps rule the Congress? They are doing it now, more than anyone before.

Hot ads, Bad idea

Barack Obama said "Its time to reward the worker who produces the wealth."

Wrong, Barry O. A worker does a job and gets paid for it. The wealth doesn't get produced until someone decides to buy what the worker made.

Obama's America will be poorer. A worker can make all the stuff no one wants until we all are taxed to death, and there will be no wealth left at all.

Value isn't in the resources used up. Value is in the wanting. Karl Marx got it wrong; he said it is the alienation of labor (from its product) equals profit. In fact, it is the desirability of the product that gives value to the labor.
